Family Worship Guide: Week of January 2nd, 2021

Joey Tomlinson   -

Note to Parents: Our Family Worship Guide has shifted to focus on explaining the memory verse for the month and looking at passages that support the catechism questions.

Memory Verse: Psalm 122:1: “I was glad when they said to me “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Catechism 14: Where do you learn how to love and obey God? Answer: In the Bible alone.

Catechism 15: Who wrote the Bible? Answer: Holy men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Monday

Scripture: “I was glad when they said to me “Let us go to the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122:1)

Point of Focus: Since the death of Christ, His people are the “house of the Lord” (Matthew 27:51). We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. This means that we have access to God through Christ any time and any place. But we should also remember, that it is good for us to gather with God’s people- His church to worship Him every Lord’s Day. So when as we memorize this passage of Scripture think about both of these things: We are the temple of the Holy Spirit and it is good to worship with God’s people each Lord’s Day.

Scripture: 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Point of Focus: This passage supports the catechism question and answer 14. Today from our passage we should see that the Scripture is the only place we learn to love and obey God because Scripture is “breathed out by God”. The word “breathed” means inspired by the Spirit. The Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit of God.

Scripture: 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Point of Focus: As we continue to look at this passage to support catechism question and answer 14, we should note that because the Scripture is breathed out by God it is “profitable”. The word “profitable” in this passage means beneficial and useful. Tomorrow we will begin to look at how specifically the Scripture is profitable.

Scripture: 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Point of Focus: First, we see that Scripture is profitable for teaching. The idea behind teaching is instruction. The Scripture can instruct us on many things, but the most important thing we should be taught is the gospel. The gospel is the good news that Jesus (truly God and truly man) came to save sinners. Today spend some time talking through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Scripture: 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Point of Focus: Another thing the Scripture is profitable is reproof. The word “reproof” means to expose or convict. As we read the Scripture, the Holy Spirit of God can use it to show us our sin, the way toward repentance, and the beauty of embracing Christ Jesus as Savior. Reproof is always for the purpose of restoration and reconciliation to God.

Scripture: 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Point of Focus: Another profitable thing about the Scripture is that it can correct us. The Scriptures when taught and handled properly can disciple us and develop us into mature followers of Christ.
