Family Worship Guide: Week of April 3rd, 2022
Memory Verse: Matthew 6:9-13: 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Question 20: How do you know that you have a soul? Answer: Because the Bible tells me so.
Question 21: In what condition did God make Adam and Eve? Answer: He made them holy and happy.
Monday
Scripture: Matthew 10:28
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Point of Focus: The Bible is clear that we do have a soul as well as a body, but the only reason we know we have a soul definitely is because the Bible tells us this. However, we all have a longing—an ache for eternity. We know instinctually that we were made for eternity. God designed us this way. And the Bible is clear that we will spend eternity either with Him or an eternity in hell. We must have our sins forgiven to spend eternity in peace with God. If our sins are not forgiven, we will experience the full force of God’s wrath for our sins for all eternity. Only Jesus Christ transfers us from hell’s grip. Trust in Jesus.

Scripture: Mark 8:34-38
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Point of Focus: We will spend the next few days focusing on this passage, but notice that Jesus reminds us that we do have a soul (V36) and our soul needs Jesus. In order to possess Christ, we must value Him above everything else. A heart that has been captured by Christ is one that will increasingly forsake all the pleasures of the world in order to gain Jesus. See Paul’s testimony in Philippians 3.

Point of Focus: If we have great reputations, riches, beauty, popularity, and any sort of material possession we could ever want yet not Christ, we are in a sad, pitiful state. In contrast, if we have none of those things, but have Jesus, we are the richest people in the world. Christ is everything.

Point of Focus: As Christians, we should hold our lives open-handed to the Lord asking Him to use us in any way that He sees fit. Our Christian service often means we must deny ourselves things—pleasures, comforts, etc. Our salvation is a complete gift from God, yet following Jesus will cost you everything. Yet the cost of following Jesus pales in comparison to how joyful it is to be with Him.

Scripture: Mark 12:30
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
Point of Focus: In today’s passage Jesus tells us that we are to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. In other words, we are to be completely captivated by and devoted to Jesus.

Scripture: Mark 12:30
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
Point of Focus: This passage is also a summary of the first four commandments. Spend time today talking about what the reformers referred to as “the first table of the law” (commandments 1-4 of the 10 commandments).
