Catechism 14: Where do you learn how to love and obey God? Answer: In the Bible alone.

Catechism 15: Who wrote the Bible? Answer: Holy men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Monday

Scripture: Exodus 20:13

13 “You shall not murder.

Point of Focus: This week we continue with looking at how the Bible teaches us to love and obey God by examining the 10 commandments. Remember as we look at these to remember that we must trust in Jesus. He is the only one who kept God’s Law- His commandments perfectly. Today’s verse says that murder is wrong. Murder is the unlawful taking of another person’s life. Jesus was murdered on the cross. Now, you have probably never murdered someone, but Jesus teaches us that even hating someone with a wrathful anger is the very same heart posture that murder can spring from (Matthew 5:21-23). Therefore, if we have ever held anger in our hearts, we have broken this commandment. Spend time confessing any anger you’ve held on to and remember that Christ died for your sin of anger so that you could be forgiven.

Tuesday

Scripture: Exodus 20:14

14 “You shall not commit adultery

Point of Focus: Parents— feel free to teach this as the age of your kid(s) dictates. For my 5 (almost 6) year old, I teach it this way: Marriage was created by God and is good. The Bible teaches that under God a wife is in charge of her husband’s body and a husband is in charge of his wife’s body (1 Corinthians 7:4).  We should never give our bodies to anyone else other than our husband or wife.

Wednesday

Scripture: Exodus 20:15

15 “You shall not steal.

Point of Focus: Stealing is the taking of someone’s rightful property by force or compulsion. We should never take what is not ours and we should never advocate that people’s personal property be taken from them.

Thursday

Scripture: Exodus 20:16

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Point of Focus: We should never lie. And we should especially never lie about a person or individual created in the image of God. We should be truth-tellers in all things. As one pastor puts it: We should speak with judgment day honesty.

Scripture: Exodus 20:17

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Point of Focus: We should never be consumed by an inordinate love of other people’s possessions or relationships. When we do this, they become idols in our lives. When they become idols in our lives, we will do all sorts of evil to gain them and in doing so, we stop worshipping our Triune God. The remedy for this is thankfulness/gratitude.

Saturday

Scripture: Matthew 22:36-40

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Point of Focus: We close our look at the Ten Commandments by seeing how Jesus reasserts them in the New Testament. Jesus divides the Ten Commandments up into “two tables” (Pastor Joey talked about this last Sunday). The first 4 commandments are summarized by the “Greatest Commandment”. The back 6 commandments are summarized by the “Second Greatest Commandment” on how we love our neighbor. Our lives should be characterized by loving God and loving our neighbor as defined by God’s Word alone.
