Family Worship Guide: Week of December 12th, 2021

Joey Tomlinson   -

*Dear families of Deer Park Fellowship. We are going to try something new beginning this week with our family devotionals. We are going to try and focus the devotion either around the memory verse for the week or one of the catechisms. As we seek to serve you well, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know what you think. – Pastor Joey

Memory Verse: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Catechism Question 12: Does God know all things? Answer: Yes, nothing can be hidden from God.

Catechism Question 13: Can God do all things? Answer: Yes, God can do all His holy will.

Monday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: Jesus is the final “Word” of God (Hebrews 1:1-2). Therefore as we study and memorize this verse we should be clear that the Apostle John is talking about Jesus when he says “Word”.

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone

Tuesday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: Jesus was in the beginning. This means that Jesus was present at the creation of all things and is Himself the Creator (John  1:3; Colossians 1:16). Right now we are celebrating Christmas and while many people may say “happy birthday Jesus” (and that’s ok), we should really be mindful that we are not celebrating the beginning of Jesus. We are celebrating the most important historical event to have ever occurred- when the Creator (Jesus) became a man. And what’s so great about this is that Jesus became a man so that He could save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21).

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone

Wednesday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: Look at the very last part of the verse today. The Word was God. Yesterday we saw that Jesus was in the beginning. This means that He has no beginning. Jesus has no beginning because Jesus is God. So Jesus coming as a man means that He added flesh (humanity) to His deity (His God-ness if you will). Therefore it is right for us to confess that Jesus is both truly man (ever since that first Christmas) and truly God (eternally so) now and forever.

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone

Thursday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: Not only is Jesus God but Jesus was with God “in the beginning”. Now, this may be confusing to us, but this passage points to what theologians call the doctrine of the Trinity. Jesus who is truly God was with the Father and the Holy Spirit “in the beginning”. Three catechism questions help us articulate this:

Is there more than 1 God? No there is only 1 true God.

In how many persons does this 1 God exist? In three persons.

Name the 3 persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone

Friday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: The trinity is a mystery we will never fully understand, but the Bible teaches it clearly to us. All three persons are co-equal and co-eternal. This means that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all truly God and that these three Persons have always existed.

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone

Saturday

Scripture: John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Point of focus: Continuing our discussion on the Trinity- the fact that we confess what the Bible teaches (which is that there are 3 Persons- the Godhead) does not mean that we believe in 3 gods. This is known as polytheism. We believe there is 1 true God and that He is the Triune God of Scripture. And the “Word” of God who is Jesus, came down to us and accomplished the Father’s eternal plan (made before time) and now the Holy Spirit changes the hearts of God’s people and changes our hearts from stone (which is calloused and dead) to flesh (which is alive and beats for the things of God) applying to us Christ’s passive and active obedience. All three Persons of the Trinity were and are active in our lives and all three are worthy of our worship and adoration.

Pray

Sing: In Christ Alone
