Family Worship Guide: Week of August 8th, 2021

Joey Tomlinson   -

Memory Verse: John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Catechism Question: How do you bring God glory? Answer: By loving Him and doing what He commands.

Scripture for the Week: Ephesians 5:22-33

Monday

Scripture: 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Point of Focus: God created men and women differently and this is good. Man and woman complement each other. They are a good team. They are both created in the image of God and they have different roles/jobs. They should both honor God by working hard for Him. Men should work as men. Women should work as women.

Prayer

Sing: Reformation Song

Tuesday

Scripture: 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

Point of Focus: A man who is a husband should love his wife and his love for his wife should be obvious in the home. The way a husband loves his wife should by nature remind people of how well Jesus loved (and loves) His church.

Prayer

Wednesday

Scripture: 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.

Point of Focus: Jesus nourishes and cherishes His church. The Bible calls Jesus’ church different things in the Bible: his bride, the new Jerusalem, zion, spiritual Israel, etc. In our passage today, the church is called Christ’s body. Jesus takes care of His body. A husband should look to how Jesus treats His own body, learn from Him, and treat his wife the same way. A husband should always nourish and cherish his wife.

Thursday

Scripture: 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

Point of Focus: A man should leave his parents when he is older and in God’s timing marry a godly woman. When he does this, he is forming a new family. And the Bible describes a man and woman becoming husband and wife as a ‘one flesh’ union. While they are still unique individuals created in God’s image, in a truer sense, they are one. The husband is to righteously love and represent His wife and the wife is to submit and respect her husband.  This is a bond that should never be broken.

Prayer

Friday

Scripture: 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

Point of Focus: This picture of marriage preaches the gospel of Jesus. Just as Jesus is the head of His church, so is a husband the head of His wife. Just as the church submits to Christ, so a wife submits to her husband as an act of worship to God.

Prayer

Sing: Reformation Song

Saturday

Scripture: 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Point of Focus: A man should adore and sacrificially love His wife and a woman should respect her husband. This brings honor and glory to God.
