Memory Verse: Matthew 22:37: And he said to him “You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, and with all of your mind”.

Catechism Question: Why did God make you and all things? Answer: For His own glory.

Scripture for the Week: Various

Monday

Scripture: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. (Psalm 1:1-2)

Point of Focus: The blessed life is to delight in the law of the Lord because the law teaches us about God’s character, ourselves, and our need for Christ. Therefore, if we are to know God we must love what God loves and in doing so we will find the blessed life.

Tuesday

Scripture: 10 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. (Hebrews 10:1-4)

Point of Focus: Jesus is the ultimate and final sacrifice for our sins and He is the ultimate and final High priest. Therefore, we can rest in Him knowing that He once for all made a payment for our sins.

Wednesday

Scripture: 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:13-14)

Point of Focus: Christ became a curse and took the punishment that we deserve for our sin (which is death and the wrath of God). And through this great act, we received the promised Spirit of God through faith. So in this unfair exchange, Christ received judgment and the death penalty as if He were a sinner and we are granted eternal life and reconciliation to God as if we are without fault. This is all of grace.

Thursday

Scripture: 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. (Romans 2:14-16)

Point of Focus: The moral law of God is written on our hearts. Our very lives bear witness to that. We know right from wrong and deep down we know that God exists and that we must give an account to Him.

Friday

Scripture: 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36-40)

Point of Focus: Here Jesus summarizes the first 4 commandments of the Moral Law (The Ten Commandments) by saying the greatest commandment is that we are to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind. Then he summarizes the remaining six commandments by saying the second greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

Saturday

Scripture: If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. (James 2:8-11)

Point of Focus: If we break any aspect of God’s Law, the Bible teaches that we break all of it. We cannot obey God’s Law in a way that honors God. That is why we need Jesus. Jesus is the only one who perfectly upheld all of God’s Law and He is the only one that can provide salvation for us.
