Memory Verse: Proverbs 1:8: Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,

and forsake not your mother’s teaching,

Catechism Questions:

Q22: Did Adam and Eve stay Holy and happy? Answer: No, They sinned against God.

Q23: What is sin? Answer: Sin is any transgression of the law of God.

Monday

Scripture: John 3:16

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Point of Focus: We are going to continue to focus on sin and the hope of salvation this week (which supports our catechism questions) by looking at John 3:16-21. Today, we see the familiar verse (see if you can say it together without looking at it) John 3:16. In it, we are reminded that it is God’s love that led to the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, for our sins. Those of us who trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins will live with him forever. Whoever does not trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins will perish in an eternal hell. There is no third way.

Tuesday

Scripture: John 3:17

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Point of Focus: The very reason Jesus came was to save people from every tribe, tongue, and nation—to truly redeem the world (that’s why he resurrected in this world!). And it is Jesus who is the exclusive way to have peace with God. So if you want to flee condemnation and guilt and shame, run to Jesus who came to save you.

Wednesday

Scripture: John 3:18

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Point of Focus: In Jesus, there is no condemnation (Romans 8:1). But if you refuse to have your sins forgiven, if you refuse to believe that it is Jesus who forgives your sins, you are condemened. The word “condemned” means that judgment will be passed on you for your sins. And if you are judged based on your sins, you will be found guilty before God.

Thursday

Scripture: John 3:19

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

Point of Focus: One of the ways we see God’s judgment on our world is how illogical and numb people are. If we think back to when Jesus came in his incarnation, we will find people who rejected him and despised him and mocked him, and then crucified him. Their hardness of heart was evidence of God’s judgment over their lives. They loved the darkness. In contrast,  we should want to be a people that by God’s grace, love the light, not the darkness. God has transferred us out of darkness and into light, so may we never run to it again. And just in case it isn’t clear, Jesus is that light.
