Monday

Scripture: John 4:24

“God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Point of Focus: Today we are going to look at what it means that “God is spirit”.  Often we see the word “spirit” used in reference to the third person of the trinity, the “Holy Spirit.”  Holy means “set apart” or “distinctly different.” God is a spirit that is distinct from human spirits or the spirits of demons or angels. There is no one like him. How is God’s spirit different from any other spirit? Here are a couple examples: 1) He is the first spirit, existing in eternity past and present at creation (Genesis 1:2) 2) His spirit is everywhere at all times (Psalm 139:7-12)

Scripture: John 4:24

“God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Point of Focus: Today we are going to look at how we worship God. Jesus said that we must worship God in spirit and truth.  Jesus is referring to genuine worship. There is false worship and there is true worship. There is worship that God hates and worship that God loves. What does it mean to worship God in spirit and in truth? It means that because the Spirit of God is in our hearts, revealing our sin to us, convicting us of it, leading us to confess our sins to God, turn from our sin, and trust in the truth that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the savior of the world who died on the cross to provide forgiveness for our sins (Titus 3:4-7). Thank God for his Holy Spirit who leads us to worship God in spirit and truth by exalting Christ. Sing praise to God for what Christ has done for you.

Scripture: Genesis 1:27 (Catechism 16)

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Point of Focus: Since we are related to Adam and Eve, every human being is like them- created in the image of God. This means that there are certain attributes of God that are present in man. God is Love, so man has the capacity to love. God is a creator, so human beings have the capacity to create. God is spirit, so everyone has a spirit. This unique identity gives every single person dignity, value, and significance. When we look upon the faces of our friends and our enemies, we must always treat people with respect, understanding that God made them and he made them in his image.

Scripture: Genesis 1:27 (Catechism 16)

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Point of Focus: God created two distinct genders. When God made man, he made male and female. He did not make any other genders. God is the one who created this world and determined how it should be ordered. He is Lord over the universe and in his Word he clearly revealed how he did it. To say otherwise is to rebel against the natural order God made. God either made us as a man or as a woman and that is a good thing. Our tendency as fallen creatures is to push against his good order. We may experience negative feelings about ourselves, but how we feel does not determine what is true. God has spoken and we must submit to his truth in prayerful dependence upon him through faith in Christ.

Scripture: Genesis 2:7 (Catechism 17)

“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

Point of Focus: While we are created in the image of God, human beings are not gods. While we have life from God as he breathes life into us, We are created beings, made from the dust of the earth. This is significant because this shows us our position under God. He is the supreme Lord of the cosmo and we are his servants. There is no room for pride when we compare ourselves to him. We are but dust of the earth, here today and gone tomorrow. God is eternal. When you find yourself anxious or despairing, cry out to the Lord, “Father, you are God and I am not!” and look to Christ who stepped down into darkness and saved you from your sin to give you life in him.

Saturday

Scripture: Genesis 2:21-22 (Catechism 17)

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”

Point of Focus: Men and women are distinctly different, yet they are made of the same flesh. They are equal in nature. They are both made in the image of God this means they are of equal of dignity, value, and worth & they are equally responsible before God to live according to his word. Praise God that he is a God of true equity.
