Family Worship Guide: Week of January 23rd, 2022
Memory Verse: Psalm 122:1: “I was glad when they said to me “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Catechism 14: Where do you learn how to love and obey God? Answer: In the Bible alone.
Catechism 15: Who wrote the Bible? Answer: Holy men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Monday
Scripture: John 14:15
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Point of Focus: These are the words of Jesus to His disciples, and we should read them as a promise. If you love the Lord, you will keep His commandments. You won’t do that perfectly on this side of eternity, but there will be a growing desire in your life to love and obey God’s Word because of your love for Jesus. Our obedience to Jesus demonstrates that He has saved us— that He has made us right with God.

Scripture: Exodus 20:3
3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
Point of Focus: As we continue to look at passages of Scripture that support our catechism questions, we turn to the Ten Commandments (also called the Moral Law of God). Today, we see the very first commandment. Anything that takes first place in our lives other than God is considered a ‘god’. Whether it be possessions (like toys) or relationships (like parents or siblings) we should see to it that nothing takes the place of God in our lives. The problem is we constantly fall short of this. We constantly love our stuff or other people more than God. And in our falling short (missing the mark) on this we should see more clearly our need for Jesus. As we will see this week and next week Jesus is the only one to uphold God’s Moral Law perfectly.

Scripture: Exodus 20:4-6
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Point of Focus: Not only should we not worship other gods and create idols but we should not make images of God to worship. No image of God is acceptable for worship (Acts 17:29). Even Jesus who is the image of the invisible God cannot be pictured to worship- not really, because He is truly man and truly God and His God-ness cannot be captured in an image made by man. The best thing for us to do is let our minds be filled by Scripture as it relates to God and our worship of Him.

Scripture: Exodus 20:7
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Point of Focus: God’s name is holy and is to be reverenced because God is holy. We should not be flippant or casual when we speak to Him or about Him. We should not profane His name in any way. He deserves our utmost respect, attention, and worship.

Friday
Scripture: Exodus 20:8-11
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Point of Focus: God has designed His world in such a way that it is good for us to work for 6 days and set aside 1 day to rest. On this day of rest, we worship with God’s people. Since creation and all throughout the Old Testament times, this was on a Saturday (God rested on the last day of the week after He created everything as a pattern for us). But since Christ resurrected (which was on a Sunday) the church has rested in worship on Sunday in honor of God in Christ making us a new creation. This means that every Sunday we are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.

Scripture: Exodus 20:12
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Point of Focus: Pastor Joey is going to mention this passage of Scripture tomorrow, so make sure to listen out for it! This is the first command of what theologians call the “second table of the Law”. We just finished the “first table of the Law” which was the first four commandments. They had to do with our relationship with God. These last 6 we will look at, address how our relationship with God should affect how we love others. Today, we look see that we should show honor and respect to our mother and father. God has given you a mom and dad to help you learn about Him and about how His world works. Their job is to point you to Jesus and your job is to honor them and respect them as they do. A good thing to remember is that you are to obey your parents in the Lord for this is right (Ephesians 6:1).
