Family Worship Guide: Week of June 26th, 2022

Joey Tomlinson   -

**Parents, the rest of June and July are review months at Deer Park Fellowship as it relates to the catechisms and memory verses. This week we are going to look at passages that support catechism #23.

Memory Verse

Matthew 6:9-13

Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11  Give us this day our daily bread, 12  and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Catechism Questions 21-23:

21. In what condition did God make Adam and Eve?
He made them holy and happy.
(Genesis 1:26–28; Psalm 8:4–8)

22. Did Adam and Eve stay holy and happy?
No. They sinned against God.
(Genesis 3:1–7; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Hosea 6:7 where “men” = Adam)

23. What is sin?
Sin is any transgression of the law of God.
(1 John 3:4; Romans 3:20; James 2:9–11)

Monday

Scripture: 1 John 3:4

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness

Point of Focus: To sin is to live as if there is no law or no morality. But God created this world and he governs it and determines right from wrong. He gave us his Law which is summarized by the 10 Commandments. So, to sin is to transgress God’s Law and to live lawlessly. We all do this. This is why we need Jesus who is the only perfect man to ever live and uphold God’s stand—God’s Law. He did this because he is not only man but he is also God.

Tuesday

Scripture: Romans 3:20

20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Point of Focus: We cannot earn our salvation by keeping the law. In fact, the Law reminds us that we can’t keep the law because sin dwells in us. Therefore, we need a Savior. That Savior is Jesus Christ.

Wednesday

Scripture: Romans 3:23-24

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Point of Focus: Who sins? Everyone sins and falls short of God’s glorious standard.

Thursday

Scripture: Romans 3:23-24

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Point of Focus: God has been gracious to us by saving us freely through the person and work of Jesus. So even though we sin, we have a great advocate that is Jesus Christ.

Friday

Scripture: James 2:9-11

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Point of Focus: The point of the passage today is to show us that we cannot keep God’s law perfectly. That is why we need Jesus.

Saturday

Scripture: James 2:9-11

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Point of Focus: This passage also teaches us that even if you break just one part of the law, from God’s view you’ve broken his whole law because his law cannot be divided much like his character cannot be divided. To break one aspect of God’s law is to break his whole law. What have we learned this week? We desperately need Jesus to forgive us and make us right with God.
