Memory Verse:

Proverbs 1:8: Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,

and forsake not your mother’s teaching,

Catechism Questions:

Q22: Did Adam and Eve stay Holy and happy? Answer: No, They sinned against God.

Q23: What is sin? Answer: Sin is any transgression of the law of God.

Monday

Scripture: 1 John 3:4

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

Point of Focus: Today we begin to look at passages of Scripture that support the catechism question and answer number 23. To sin is to break the law of God. In fact, that is the very definition of sin— the transgression of God’s law. When we sin we transgress the law by either (a) breaking his law (sin of commission) or (b) failing to do something he has told us to do (sin of omission). We are guilty of both types of sins.

Tuesday

Scripture: Romans 3:20

20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Point of Focus: Not only do we transgress God’s Law through sins of commission and sins of omission, but it is clear that we cannot earn our salvation by striving to keep God’s Law. This is because the requirement of God as it relates to his law is perfection. So the law serves us to show us of our guilt before God, but it cannot set us free.

Scripture: James 2:9-11

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Point of Focus: Today, we see that even if you were to break only one of the ten commandments (which isn’t possible), you are still a transgressor of God’s whole Law because his law cannot be divided up any more than his character can. The same God who said “do not lie” also said, “honor your mother and father”. To break one of these means we have broken the entirety of God’s Law and we alone can do nothing to remedy that.

Thursday

Scripture: James 2:9-11

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Point of Focus: One of the things God uses the law for is to convict us (by his Spirit) that we are transgressors. This should ultimately drive us to  God himself who is the only one who can provide true forgiveness and redemption to us.

Friday

Scripture: Galatians 3:10

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

Point of Focus: As we saw a few days ago, if we rely on the works of the Law for salvation, we are doomed. We can never be saved by keeping the Law because we are incapable of keeping God’s Law for our justification because of our sin nature.

Prayer

Saturday

Scripture: Galatians 3:13

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—

Point of Focus: Thankfully Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law that only shows us our transgressions and gives us no hope of redemption. Christ became the curse that we deserved in his crucifixion so that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21)
